Graphic Design

A few weeks ago, I took part in a really amazing workshop sponsored by Boston Progress Arts Collective: Graphic Design 101. Lead by painter and artist extraordinaire Sophea Khem and Theresa Hwang, architect, the hands-on workshop taught me a whole lot about how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to make graphic design elements. I just wanted to learn how to make cool flyers.

The workshop lead us through the design of a couple of flyers that Sophea had designed for Boston Progress Arts Collective events. I’m a big fan of much of his flyers and his paintings. You can see them live in person at East Meets West Bookstore at 934 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge. My favorite of all time is the flier he made for the East Meets Words Open Mic November 2007 when Omar featured.

It is truly one of my favorites. I like the background.

I learned about how to do selections, how to create vector art from photos, how to create interesting shapes with Illustrator. The concepts themselves weren’t so hard, but I was always just so confused by all the tools and options that are available in these Adobe tools. The workshop gave me confidence to take the tools and to create my own designs.

After the workshop, I signed myself up to do a flier for public consumption. And here is the fruit of my labors. Feedback appreciated.

Now, I’ve set my sights on redesigning this website.

Happy Valentine’s Day

I don’t think one should only love one’s Valentine on Valentine’s Days, so I try not to make a big deal out of it. But it is an excuse to cook some delicious food and make some cool crafts.  So, over the past week, I made some Valentines for the Valentines in my life. Happy Valentine’s Day!
